cajamarca

Cajamarca (field recordings #1) appropriates the audio of a dialogue between the Inca Atahualpa (played by Christopher Plummer) and the conquistador Francisco Pizarro (played by Robert Shaw) in the film The Royal Hunt of the Sun (directed by Irving Lerner, 1969 and based on the 1964 play by Peter Shaffer). By isolating the “conversations” between the characters and removing Pizarro’s words, the audio presents 8 monologues by the tragic figure of Atahualpa, from his capture until his treasonous execution.

“Hare’s subtle reference to anthropological research plays with the reversal of colonialism as it has been portrayed in entertainment culture.” Flavia Frigeri and Sharon Lerner
